Infrastructure
(a) (i) What is the estimated cost of infrastructure damage caused by the recent flooding and (ii) which infrastructure was most affected, (b) what is the (i) estimated cost and (ii) total length of damaged roads, (c) how many (i) schools and (ii) health facilities were damaged, (d) what is the estimated cost to repair these schools and health facilities in (c) above, (e) how long does it take for national disaster funding to be disbursed and (f) what is the projected turnaround time for repairing the (i) roads, (ii) schools and (iii) health facilities mentioned above?
- (i) The estimated cost of infrastructure road network and general buildings damage for which the Department of Infrastructure is responsible is R2.1612 billion. Assessments are still underway and this amount could still increase. It should be noted that damage to health and education infrastructure is not shared with DOI.
(ii) The road network.
- (i) Estimated road network damage is R2.0 billion.
(ii) The exact total length is unknown but the damage is typically concentrated at structures which carry a disproportionate cost relative to length.
(c) and (d) Refer (a) (i)
(e) The relevant team from National Government is currently in the Western Cape assessing the damage done by the recent storms. It is impossible to determine a timeline at this stage.
(f) (i) Unknown at this stage. The extent of damage and costs of repairs are in excess of available resources, and repairs will therefore be prioritised and implemented in a phased manner as funds allow.
