(a) How many Grade 12 learners in the province took Mathematics in the (i) 2024 and (ii) 2025 academic year, (b) how many Grade 12 learners in the province took Physical Sciences in the (i) 2024 and (ii) 2025 academic year, (c) what support programmes are currently provided by his Department to support Grade 12 learners taking Mathematics and Physical Sciences and (d) what is the total cost of these support programmes mentioned in (c) above to his Department per month for the 2025 academic year?
My department has informed me of the following:
(a) (i) 15 048

(c) Support is provided across the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase:
4 000 learners in Grade 10 and 4 000 learners in Grade 11 are receiving targeted Mathematics tuition and by extension, Physical Sciences.
4 000 learners are receiving Grade 12 support via telematics and a provincial virtual tutoring programme, covering both subjects
200 teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge is also being strengthened to improve the quality of teaching across the two subjects.
“Tips for success” support material is issued to all learners to provide examination structure and examination support
(d) The cost of FET support across our gateway subjects totals R25 million per year, or approximately R2,1 million per month.
