With reference to crime statistics, case tracking data and other judicial information available to her Department for the 2025/26 financial year:

(a)  What was the total number of reported cases in the province relating to (i) rape, (ii) sexual assault, (iii) domestic violence, (iv) attempted rape and (v) murder where the victim was female, (b) what were the specific (i) detection rates, (ii) arrest rates, (iii) conviction rates and (iv) case withdrawal rates for rape cases in the province and (c) what were the specific (i) detection rates, (ii) arrest rates and (iii) conviction rates?

Answer Body: 

(a) (i)   Rape – 4411

            (ii)   Sexual assault – 1491

            (iii)  Domestic violence – 5301

            (iv)  Attempted rape – 377

            (v)  Murder where the victim was female – 374

      (b) Rape cases

            (i)    68.85%

            (ii)   51.91%

            (iii)  76.59%

            (iv)  15.43%

      (c) (i)    Detection rates

                   Sexual Assault – 77.21%

                    Domestic Violence - Domestic violence is not a distinct crime category but encompasses a range of criminal offences, including, among others, assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, crimen injuria, intimidation and sexual offences. As a result, these offences are recorded and monitored under their respective crime categories on the South African Police Service (SAPS) corporate systems and not as a single, standalone domestic violence category. Consequently, the calculation of consolidated detection rates for domestic violence is not possible.

                    Attempted Rape – 79.17%

                    Murder – 6.25%

            (ii)   Arrest rates

                   Sexual Assault – 57.23%

                    Domestic Violence - Domestic violence is not a distinct crime category but encompasses a range of criminal offences, including, among others, assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, crimen injuria, intimidation and sexual offences.
