Police Oversight and Community Safety
With regard to the deployment of 800 troops on the Cape Flats:
What long-term strategy exists to ensure sustained crime reduction beyond the temporary interventions?
Over and above conventional policing initiatives and the deployment of the Anti-Gang Unit, Operations Shanela, Ukubuza, and Prosper have been launched as integrated operational models aimed at combating violent crime, gangsterism, and other organised criminal activities. Furthermore, the Organised Crime Threat Assessment (OCTA) model is being utilised to identify, assess, and address the activities of criminal gang groupings. The OCTA model enables a structured analysis of organised crime threats by evaluating the capability, influence, and operational impact of such groups, thereby supporting informed operational planning and targeted intervention strategies.
