In the light of the fire damage at the Railton Clinic in Swellendam and its subsequent closure for repairs, which has affected residents of Swellendam: When is the clinic expected to reopen and resume full services?
After significant fire damage to sections of the Railton Clinic services were relocated to a temporary Primary Health Care facility situated on the Swellendam Hospital premises (2.8km away from Railton Clinic) for the duration of the planned construction and refurbishment works.
Due to poor performance, the services of the first contractor were terminated. A new contractor was appointed and site handover over to commence work was on 20 April 2026. Barring any interruption caused by inclement weather, the refurbishment and construction will be completed in July 2026.
Upon construction completion, it is estimated that it will take 3 months to commission the renovated building and decommission the temporary service from the Swellendam Hospital. Therefore, it is anticipated that the Railton Clinic will resume health services on in October 2026.
