Question Body:

Why has his department opened up late admission applications for 2027 after the 14 April 2026 on-time applications closed?

Answer Body:

14 April 2026 marked the conclusion of the “on-time” application period for Grades R, 1 and 8 for the 2027 school year.
A defined application window allows for more effective planning, the timeous placement of learners, and the appropriate allocation of resources ahead of the new school year. It also enables school governing bodies to apply their admission policies in a structured and fair manner, allowing the department to identify where spaces remain available for learners who apply late or who have not yet been successfully placed.
At the same time, not all applications are submitted within the prescribed timeframe. Late applications may arise due to various factors, including family relocation, personal circumstances, or a lack of awareness of the process. The WCED continues to make provision for late applications after the closure of the defined application window.
Parents were able to submit late applications online from 15 April 2026 to 17 May 2026, and the online system is now closed. However, late applications can still be captured in person through the education district offices.
This approach balances the need for structured planning with the flexibility required to accommodate learners who still require placement after the official closing date.
