Given the findings of the GITOC Western Cape Gang Monitor on the expansion of drug trafficking into smaller portside towns, such as Saldanha Bay:

  1. (a) What immediate interventions are she and her Department implementing to contain this spread and (b) how are these interventions being coordinated with the relevant law enforcement agencies;
  2. whether her Department has assessed the current policing capacity in the smaller port towns affected by drug trafficking; if so, what additional resources have been allocated to these areas?
Answer Body: 

 

(1)     (a)   The Department supports the K9 units in Swartland in the West Coast, Overstrand in Overberg, and Mosselbay and rural LEAP in Swartland and Overstrand. Part of their focus is on law enforcement pertaining to drug related offences.

           (b) These units work together with police and municipal law enforcement in joint and integrated operations.

         (2)   The Department has not done an assessment on the policing capacity in small towns affected by drug trafficking. This question should be directed to SAPS.
