With regard to the mobile abattoir initiative to support the participation of emerging farmers in formal markets:
- Whether his Department will be outsourcing this service; if so, when will this initiative be rolled out; if not;
- whether his Department will purchase the mobile units; if so, what are the relevant details?
- The Department will not outsource this service. It will be implemented internally by officials of the department under its Programme 6: Agricultural Economic Services in collaboration with Programmes: Agricultural Producer Support and Development (APSD), and Veterinary Services with the aim to increase agri-processing capacity and improve food safety in the Western Cape. The initiative is planned to be rolled out during the 2026/27 financial year, but in a phased approach.
- The Department will procure the mobile units through Government Motor Transport (GMT) given that its mobile units. These units will follow a similar model to the two existing mobile units currently in operation under the Agri-Processing Subprogramme. The mobile abattoirs will be containers that will be fully equipped with slaughtering and processing facilities, enabling the production of value-added meat products on-site. The mobile facilities have the capability to be moved from site to site based on need.
