(1) Whether the national Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is involved in supporting the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) 2026; if so, in what capacity;
Response:
The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) submitted an application for funding to the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and currently awaiting the outcome of their funding application for 2026.
(2) whether his Department is providing any (a) financial or (b) non-financial support to the KKNK 2026; if so, what are the relevant details.
Response:
(a) Yes, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will provide financial support to the KKNK 2026 in recognition of the festival's contribution to the arts and cultural sector in the Western Cape over the past 30 years. The support is towards commissioned artworks, artist fees, various performance platforms and festival discussion stages.
(b) In addition, the department will provide non-financial support through collaboration with festival organisers, promotional support and stakeholder engagement, in line with its mandate to promote, develop and preserve arts and cultural activities in the province.
(3) (a) how much funding did (i) the national government and (ii) his Department con-tribute to the KKNK in 2025;
Response:
(i) KKNK submitted an application for funding, however, the National Government nullified the process, and all applicants had to resubmit their applications. The second call for applications took place after the festival, and as a result the 2025 KKNK could not resubmit their application.
(ii) The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport provided financial support to KKNK 2025 through Emergency Support Services and the support of emerging artists, which included artist fees, accommodation, and travel.
(4) how (a) much total revenue did the KKNK 2025 generate for the local economy and (b) many jobs were created and supported directly by the KKNK 2025?
Response:
- The Department informed us that KKNK generated an estimated economic impact of between R72 million and R89 million for the local economy of Oudtshoorn, with a broader economic impact of between R161 million and R178 million in the Western Cape economy.
- The Department informed us that In 2025, the KKNK created 781 job opportunities, with an additional 142 opportunities for exposure and participation, resulting in a total of 923 job opportunities created and supported directly by the festival.
