- What is the progress with the Krotoa Foundation’s application to rename Cape Town International Airport and (b) what steps will the Western Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee take to ensure that the application is processed fairly and transparently?
6(a) The application to rename Cape Town International Airport to Krotoa was submitted on 2 July 2025. The application served before the Western Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (WCPGNC) at its meeting held on 18 August 2025.
The Committee considered the application and noted that the section of the application relating to public consultation remains outstanding. Evidence of a comprehensive and inclusive public participation process is a requirement in terms of both the South African Geographical Names Council Act, 1998 (Act 118 of 1998) and the Handbook on Geographical Names, which guide the standardisation and processing of geographical names in South Africa.
(b) To ensure that the application is processed fairly and transparently, the Western Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee continues to apply the legislative framework impartially and consistently. The applicant was invited to attend a meeting of the Committee on 18 August 2025, during which the applicant was guided through the application requirements. The Committee further assisted the applicant in understanding the nature, scope, and importance of conducting public consultation, including the type of evidence required to complete the submission.
The Committee now awaits the resubmission of a completed application inclusive of the required evidence of public consultation.
