South Africa is on track to export 202,2 million cartons of citrus in 2025:
- How will the province contribute to (i) the export total as a percentage of South African exports and (ii) this total expressed as the total number of cartons of citrus packed and (b) what are the foreseen impediments to increase the province’s exports?
- Although the Western Cape is only third in the total area under production of citrus in South Africa, (i) it’s contribution to the total citrus exports of the country is more than 60%. This is due to better quality, more variety of crops and the better transport infrastructure in the province. (ii) It is predicted that the Western Cape should export around 121 million cartons of citrus for the 2025 season. (b) Lack of port capacity, rail and road infrastructure issues and diseases or only some of the constraints that could limit the increase in exports for the Western Cape.
