(a) How many pregnant girls attended school in (i) 2020/21, (ii) 2021/2022,
(iii) 2022/23, (iv) 2023/24 and (v) 2024/25 and (b) what were the ages of these
girls?
he Western Cape Education Department (WCED) receives reports on
the number of learners who were pregnant at each school a year in
arrears, via the Annual School Survey. Schools report the number of
learner pregnancies for the previous year in the Annual School Survey
(e.g. for the 2024 ASS, a school will report on the total number of
pregnancies during the 2023 academic year).
Data on the accurate number of pregnancies for the age group should
be obtained from the Department of Health, as the custodian of health
records.
(i) Learners pregnancies in 2020 (2021 ASS): 1 828
(ii) Learners pregnancies in 2021 (2022 ASS): 1 754
(iii) Learners pregnancies in 2022 (2023 ASS): 1 602
(iv) Learners pregnancies in 2023 (2024 ASS): 2 056
(v) Data from the 2025 ASS not yet available
(b) Data on pregnancies per age group is collected by the Department of
Health.
