Answer Body:

  1. What is the detailed breakdown of how many free Wi-Fi facilities there are in the province?

The list of sites where the Public Wi-Fi service is installed is attached at Annexure A. It should be noted that the WCG has committed to 1600 sites to offer the service, but we are currently in a migration period between broadband contracts and since the broadband service has been terminated at various sites, the associated Public Wi-Fi hotspots are currently not live. Accordingly, there are 33 sites where the WCG is waiting for the service provider to install the service under the new contract.

  1. How much is the provincial government spending on the free Wi-Fi facilities in the province?

The WCG is currently spending R2,344,228.36 per month on the Public Wi-Fi service, or a total of R30,476,155.43 per financial year.
