Police Oversight and Community Safety
In the light of the recent reports, including but not limited to reports that the journalist Sandiso Phaliso has experienced harassment and physical assault at the hands of the police while trying to report from crime scenes in Nyanga:
(a) What are the current statistics for the past three months on the number of civilians who have (i) died and (ii) sustained serious injury as the result of altercations or confrontations with SAPS officers, (b) what immediate disciplinary and/or criminal action has been taken against SAPS members implicated in such incidents, (c) what mechanisms are in place in her Department to ensure that such cases are tracked and concluded in a timely and transparent manner, particularly those involving journalists and other civilians and (d) what specific oversight mechanisms has her Department implemented to prevent patterns of abuse, particularly against journalists and community members in high-crime areas such as Nyanga?
