With regard to deaths at residential facilities for elderly persons in the province:
What is the number of recorded deaths per (a) funded and (b) private facility in (i) 2019, (ii) 2020, (iii) 2021, (iv) 2022, (v) 2023, (vi) 2024 and (vii) 2025 to date?
Answer Body:
- (a) and (b) Funded and Private Residential facilities are not required by the Older Persons Act to report deaths at residential facilities to the Department of Social Development. Each individual death will be reported by the facility to a state or private medical practitioner who needs to certify the death as natural or unnatural and issue a death certificate. Where unnatural deaths are found to have occurred, they are reported by the medical practitioner to SAPS for further investigation.
