Education
With regard to schools in townships and rural areas:
Whether there are any plans in place to upgrade sporting facilities at these schools so that learners at these schools can also be able to participate in different sporting codes; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
My department has informed me of the following:
While support for school sport primarily lies with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) received an earmarked allocation of R61 407 000 in the 2025/26 financial year for the development of Mass participation; Opportunity and Access; Development and Growth Programme (MOD) centres at WCED schools.
The budget is used for the development of shared infrastructure to support this programme at schools, contributing towards increased participation in different sporting codes.
DCAS further supports the programme with funding for coaches, equipment and
operations.
In the 2025/26 financial year, the Department is currently working on developing
new infrastructure at:
• Lentegeur Secondary School
• Cornflower Primary School
• Lavender Hill High School
• Bastiaanse Secondary School
• Imizamo Yethu Secondary School
These developments will allow for the learners from these schools to participate in various sporting codes including hockey, soccer/futsal, cricket and rugby.
