With regard to child trafficking incidents:

  1. (a) What is the current status of child trafficking cases within the province and (b) what is the number of reported incidents in the past three years;
  2. whether there are any collaborative efforts between provincial and national authorities to combat child trafficking in the region; if so, what are the relevant details?
Answer Body: 

(1(a)   One case is currently under investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in the Western Cape. One case was withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after the victim returned to Zimbabwe.

                     One case has been finalised with a guilty sentence and direct imprisonment.

              (b)   Three

  1. Yes, there are collaborative efforts between provincial and national authorities to combat child trafficking. These include joint operations and investigations by SAPS and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), coordination through provincial task teams aligned with the National Intersectoral Committee on Trafficking in Persons, and joint training initiatives. The Department of Social Development also works with provinces to provide shelters and support services for victims, especially children.
