What is a comprehensive update on the development of shared facilities for sport and recreation in the province, (b)(i) how many shared sport and recreational facilities have been constructed to date, if any, and (ii) where are these facilities located, (c) how many facilities are in areas previously classified as (i) white, (ii) coloured and (iii) black areas and (d)(i) what is the current status of each facility, (ii) when is the overall programme expected to be completed and (iii) which sport bodies or codes often use these facilities?
Answer Body: 

(a) Comprehensive update

  • To date, six multi-purpose sport and recreation shared facilities have been delivered across the Western Cape. The Shared Facilities Initiative is a strategic, cross-sector collaboration between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), designed to optimise under-utilised school infrastructure for sport, recreation and arts and culture. Each facility offers high-quality playing surfaces, floodlighting (Except in George and Lentegeur), clubhouses (or pending clubhouse works) and support infrastructure.

(b) (i) Number constructed to date

  • Six (6) shared sport and recreation facilities have been completed.

  1. Beaufort West (Central Karoo)
  2. George (Eden) x 2
  3. Malmesbury (West Coast)
  4. Kraaifontein (Metro East)
  5. Lavender Hill (Metro South)
  6. Lentegeur (Metro South) – still under construction

(c) Historical classification

  • White areas: 0
  • Coloured areas: 5 (Beaufort West, Malmesbury, Kraaifontein, Lavender Hill, Lentegeur)
  • Black areas: 1 (George – Thembalethu High School precinct)
