Question Body:

Whether his Department has any empowerment projects on farms in the province; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body:

The Department does have empowerment projects which are implemented on farms. These agri worker empowerment projects include, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Western Cape Prestige Agri Awards: By facilitating the WCPAA, the Department seeks to broaden the agri workers’ scope and understanding of the agricultural sector and expose them to new life experiences.
  2. Labour Rights and Responsibilities sessions: Facilitated with all agri workers throughout the province, these sessions take the form of training workshops to capacitate agri workers, supervisors, Human Resources (HR) and employers on labour legislation.  Seasonal workers are specifically targetted, as there is often a misconception that they are not protected by the same labour legislation and thus don’t enjoy the same rights.
  3. Health Care Worker Training: Training of agri workers as healthcare support staff in order to ensure that agri workers receive the necessary first aid services and basic health care on farms.
  4. Safe transportation of agri workers: Workshops on the safe transportation of agri workers which focusses on educating agri workers, drivers and farm management on dignified manners of transporting staff.
  5. Substance Abuse Awareness and Prevention: training of agri worker and rural communities as resources in their communities in order to prevent and address substance abuse. These community members also provide support to those afflicted by substance abuse.
  6. Other initiatives such as Awareness and information sessions, as well as financial literacy training are not always held on a farm, however people working and living on farms are recruited and included in the target audience.
