- Whether there are measures in place to ensure that the increased number of students who are enrolled for teaching courses receive the necessary support to complete their courses; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
- (a) what are the financial implication with regard to bursaries to enrolled teacher students, (b) what is the cost with regard to students who (i) did not complete the course, and (ii) those who completed it, (c) how much of the debt with regard to the students who had not completed the course the Department has to carry itself, (e) how many of the 15 655 teachers who have qualified across the country at the end of 2014 are from the Western Cape and (f) how many of the students who have qualified are (i) currently in the employ of her Department and (ii) did not receive positions?
2. (1) Training of teachers falls under the Department of Higher Education and Training
(2) (a) – (e) The National Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme provides bursaries for student teachers and is managed by the Department of Basic Education. This info is accordingly not available to us.
(f) The Department of Basic Education provided a list of 819 Funza Lushaka Bursary Holders who graduated in 2014 and who want to teach in the Western Cape to the department for placement/ employment. The Department has placed/employed 76% of the graduates.
