Community Safety
1(a) What is the rationale behind the establishment of Safety Labs in the province, (b) how many have been established and (c) in what areas are they already in operation;
2. whether Safety Labs is a government or party political programme;
3(a) who runs and manages the Safety Labs, (b) how much is budgeted for the operations of the Safety Labs and (c) how much of the planned budget is allocated to salaries?
(1)(a) The rationale for establishing the Safety Lab is to create an environment for the development of safety models and initiatives within the Western Cape. The Safety Lab explores best practices, reviews and implements innovation aimed at increasing safety in our communities.
(b) One
(c ) The work of the Safety Lab is project based with some of their projects, such as the GIVA Application, focused on the whole of the Western Cape whilst other projects such as Nyanga Yetu being limited to particular areas such as the Zolani Centre in Nyanga.
(2) The Safety Lab is a government programme.
(3)(a) The Safety Lab is managed through a Memorandum of Agreement with the Cape Town Partnership
(b) R 5.27 million
(c) R3.16 million or 60% of the budget. The Safety Lab, as a think tank aimed at developing and testing creative and innovative ways of increasing safety in our communities is therefore structured with a large focus on human capital.
