(a) How many learners have not been placed in schools in the current academic year, (b) what is the breakdown of these learners with regard to (i) age, (ii) gender, (iii) race, (iv) grade and (v) location of the schools to which they applied, (c) how many learners were still unplaced in March, (d) what measures has her Department put in place to ensure that all learners are placed in schools in the province and (e) how are these learners going to be assisted to catch up after missing out on six months of schooling?

  1. (a)    113 learners are unplaced. These are late applications and re-locations in many cases.

(d)     The WCED opened 42 additional classes in 2018.

62 Mobile classes were procured and delivered.

Dedicated officials assist parents with placement.

(e)     It would be incorrect to state that all these learners have missed out on six months of schooling. Many of these learners have received tuition elsewhere during this year, however, have since relocated to the Western Cape or elsewhere within the Province.  

Learners who need it will be provided with a catch-up programme

Affected schools will adjust curriculum and assessment programmes to maximise lost time and to allow for catch up support.
