Covid-19 Ad Hoc Committee established

Speaker Masizole Mnqasela announced the establishment of an ad hoc parliamentary committee specifically tasked with overseeing the Western Cape Government’s efforts in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and the enforcement and effects of the national lockdown.

 

The decision to establish the committee was made in terms of Standing Rule 119(1)(b) which allows for the Speaker to establish an ad hoc committee in circumstances when the House has been adjourned for more than 14 days.

Recommendation for Western Cape Commissioner for Children released

The Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Social Development is pleased to announce that on 19 March the House adopted its report on the appointment of a commissioner for Children in the Western Cape.

 

In terms of section 2(1) (2) (e) of the Western Commissioner for Children Act, 2019 (Act 2 of 2019), the Committee recommends that Ms Christina Nomdo be appointed as the Western Cape Commissioner for Children.

 

Media briefing on COVID-19 measures

The Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, Masizole Mnqasela, will be convening a media briefing on Thursday, 19 March at 08:30. The Speaker wishes to communicate the decisions taken by all the political parties represented in the WCPP to deal with the directives in the declaration of the President regarding the COVID-19 virus. The aim of the measures is to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus and ensure the health and well-being of Members, employees and stakeholders.

Lit up in rainbow flag in support of Cape Town Pride

For the first time ever, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament building has been lit up in rainbow colours, in celebration and support of Pride week, currently taking place in Cape Town.

Cape Town Pride is an organisation that works to raise awareness around the issues faced by the LGBTQI+ community. The building was lit up for the first time last night, and it will remain lit every night until Sunday morning.

Opening, SOPA, as well as SOPA debate and reply by the Premier to take place in Mitchells Plain

The official opening of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP), and the Premier’s State of the Province Address (SOPA) will take place on Thursday, 20 February 2020, at the Rocklands Civic Centre in Mitchells Plain at 11:00. The debate on the SOPA, and the Premier’s reply to the debate, will commence on the following day, Friday, 21 February 2020, at 08:00, in the same venue.
