Questions and Replies

The right of Members to put questions to Ministers is an important part of ensuring the executive authority’s accountability to the Provincial Parliament. Questions may be put to Ministers related to their spheres of responsibility. Replies to questions are either given orally in the House or in writing. The replies to oral questions are recorded in Hansard.

Following the recent fire that affected the Overstrand Municipality, particularly Kleinmond:

 

  1. (a) How many hectares of land was affected in total, (b) of the land that was affected, how much was (i) public land and (ii) private land and (c) under whose jurisdiction did the land fall in b(i);
  1. whether there were any fire assessments or mitigation strategies in place before the fire took place; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;

 

  1. (a) how many firefighters were deployed in total and (b) from which local munici-palities were they deployed;
  1. what support did the Provincial Disaster Management Centre provide to the Overstrand Municipality in fighting the fire?

According to the City of Cape Town’s adjustment budget the Western Cape Safety Plan, as implemented through the City’s LEAP plan, has a “revised business plan” resulting in budget adjustments:

  1. (a) When was the revised business plan concluded between the City and the Province, (b) can a copy of the revised business plan as referred to in the City’s adjustment budget be made available and (c) in what ways does the revised business plan amend the Western Cape Safety Plan;
  1. whether the Western Cape Safety Plan has been rewritten; if so, can a copy be made available;

With regard to the South African Schools Act of 1996 that states that all children between the ages of 7 and 15 are required to attend school:

(1) Whether her Department keeps record of the number of eligible children who are not enrolled at a school; if so, (a) what system does her Department use to keep record, (b) what is the breakdown per (i) region and (ii) age and (c) what are the main reasons for such eligible children not attending school;

(2) whether her Department has undertaken any measures to assist enrolling these children; if so, what are the relevant details;

(3) what is the nature of the support provided by her Department and/or NPO partners to provide services to support vulnerable school-aged children in entering the education system?
