Speaker hosts breakfast in commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities
Speaker Sharna Fernandez, hosted a breakfast in commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities at the Western Cape Provincial Parliament on 3 December.
Standing Committee to host kit handover
The Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport will be hosting the handover of kit to SAFA’s Western Cape Teams by the SAB League on 1 December.
The SAB League is a National Youth Diversion Programme within the National U21 Regional Football League, the largest grassroots football development programme in South Africa targeting 18 to 21 year olds. The SAB League has been the starting block for many of today’s greatest players participating in the Premier Soccer League, the national team and participating in the international football arena.
New Western Cape permanent delegate to the NCOP
Hon Okkie (Ockert) Terblanche was appointed as permanent Western Cape delegate to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), representing the Democratic Alliance. The motion was moved by Chief Whip of the Majority Party, Hon Mark Wiley, at the Sitting of Western Cape Provincial Parliament on 15 October. Hon Terblanche will subsequently be sworn in by the NCOP at a future sitting of the House.
New Member sworn in
Daylin Mitchell was sworn in by Speaker Sharna Fernandez as the newest Member for the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) on 21 September.
At 29, Mitchell is the youngest Member of the WCPP ever. During his political career he has served as young leader in the Democratic Alliance, as well as interim youth chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Western Cape Metro Region. From 2013 to 2014 he served as national director for provincial growth and guidance and from 2014, until becoming a Member, as Democratic Alliance chief of staff at the WCPP.
NCOP Visit Week
Members of the National Council of Provinces and the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will undertake oversight visits to various institutions in the Cape Town area from 14 to 17 September.
These oversight visits, under the theme “ Advancing infrastructure investment and development for better services to communities”, are intended to enable Parliament, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP), the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), and particularly the National Council of Provinces, an opportunity to monitor the state of infrastructure.
Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill
As part of its oversight function, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Community Development will consider the Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill [B6B-2014] (NCOP).
Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport shows support to Western Cape football teams
The Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport hosted a support event for the football clubs representing the Western Cape in the top two tiers of football in SA at the WCPP on 9 September.
In an effort to promote support for local clubs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the National First Division (NFD), the committee hosted a finger lunch attended by executive members of Ajax Cape Town, Vasco and Milano United, as well as the coaches, management and players of Ajax Cape Town.
Public hearings on Liquor Amendment Bill
The Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s Standing Committee on Economic Opportunities, Tourism and Agriculture will consider the Western Cape Liquor Amendment Bill [B 3-2015]. Submissions are invited at three public hearings to be held in the Western Cape: George on 8 September, Robertson on 9 September and Cape Town on 11 September.

As part of its oversight function, the Standing Committee on Local Government of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will consider the Disaster Management Amendment Bill [B 10B – 2015] (NCOP).
NCOP to visit two Western Cape municipalities
Members of the National Council of Provinces and the Western Cape Provincial Parliament will undertake an oversight visit to the Kannaland and Beaufort West municipalities on 22 and 23 July respectively.
