Focus on Provincial Budget for 2018/19
From 23 to 28 March, the budgets of all Western Cape Government departments, 14 votes in total, will be debated in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. The Ministers responsible for the various votes, will open the debates, after which Members will deliberate the specific budgets. The process will culminate on 28 March, when Members will finalise the budget.

Women's issues to the forefront
In her capacity as President of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s branch of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, Speaker Sharna Fernandez has initiated various activities during 2017 to firmly place the issue of gender-based violence on the agenda of the institution. In September she hosted a Women’s Dialogue, attended by delegates from various NGOs and CBOs that focus on gender-based violence issues across the Western Cape.

Cape Town Opera to brief standing committee
The Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and Sport will be briefed by Cape Town Opera on its programmes on 20 September. Cape Town Opera not only showcases international acts but also has an education and outreach component. The organisation will provide information on their flagship programme, Opera is My First Language, which focuses on addressing the lack of formal music education in rural and township Western Cape Schools.
